Independent medical practitioner providing services to patients from Paeds in a Pod rooms.
Dr Luisa Orellana is a general paediatrician and has also completed training in paediatric emergency medicine.
She has experience in several paediatric subspecialties, including developmental paediatrics, paediatric ICU, tertiary neonatal practice, and paediatric and neonatal retrievals. She particularly enjoys working with neonates, infants and toddlers and is passionate about child protection and advocacy. Most recently she has enjoyed expanding her skills in telehealth, specifically in urgent paediatric care.
Dr Orellana holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) as well as a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), all achieved through the University of Queensland. She also holds a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (MPHTM) from James Cook University.
Most of her training and working life as a doctor has been in Queensland. She trained at the Royal Children’s Hospital, The Mater Children’s and Mothers’ Hospitals, and the Queensland Children’s Hospital, all in Brisbane. She has worked in rural, remote and metropolitan settings, including stints in Cairns, Sunshine Coast and Rockhampton. Dr Orellana was also fortunate to gain valuable experience in both adult and paediatric emergency medicine while travelling and working for 18 months in Ireland.
Dr Orellana pursued a career in medicine because she wanted to make a difference by giving back to the community and caring for those who are most vulnerable. She loves the opportunity to continuously learn, which a career in medicine provides.
Working with children brings a smile to her face every day. She loves seeing the positive results of her practice and working with like-minded colleagues as part of a team with a common goal. Dr Orellana is empathic and open-minded. She always aims to provide her patients and their families with an individual and holistic approach to healthcare.
Outside of work, Dr Orellana and her partner are proudly raising their active and inquisitive young son, and will soon welcome a new baby into the family. They have enjoyed the ongoing challenge of renovating their home and unruly garden. She is expanding her gardening skills to include growing her own produce garden – something which supports her particular interest in sustainable living. She is a fluent Spanish speaker.
