Dr Kirsten Zahnow
BSc, MBBS, FRACPSpringfield
As a general paediatrician, Dr Kirsten Zahnow cares for babies, children and teenagers medical, developmental and behavioural needs. She follows the progress of her patients and their families as they grow, providing support when required.
Her experience spans neonatal care, acute medical care to paediatric patients, ongoing care for chronic conditions, and work in developmental and behavioural paediatrics.
She completed a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in 2000, and a Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2004, both at the University of Queensland. She achieved her Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Paediatrics and Child Health Division (FRACP), in January 2015.
She completed her first year in paediatrics at Ipswich Hospital and returned in 2015 as a consultant paediatrician – she continues her work there today. She has also trained and worked at the Royal Children’s Hospital, the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane, as well as Cairns Hospital.
It was while working as a junior doctor at Ipswich Hospital that she was inspired to pursue her interest in paediatrics. The Director of Paediatrics at the time was the type of doctor she hoped to be. He taught her to take the time to understand the families of her patients and to adapt treatment plans to suit their needs, as well as to listen, be respectful and care for patients, their families and her colleagues.
Today, Dr Zahnow enjoys being able to help children and their families through challenging times in their lives. She admires children’s resilience and their ability to teach us how to handle tough situations. She takes great reward from making a positive difference in the lives of the children and families she cares for.
Dr Zahnow also enjoys teaching and is an instructor for Advanced Paediatric Life Support. She’s an Ipswich local – she was born in Ipswich Hospital and has spent most of her career there – and has lived in Ipswich most of her life. Dr Zahnow is kept busy at home as a mum to two young children.
