Dr Fred Nagel is a general paediatrician with extensive expertise in diagnosis, and provision of medical care for infants, children and teenagers.
His experience is broad, including newborn care, behaviour and autism, constipation and bed wetting (enuresis), epilepsy, respiratory conditions including asthma, gastroesophageal reflux, and common bleeding disorders. He has also an Allergy Fellowship, achieving a Master’s Degree in 1992 (diagnosis, treatment and management of allergic disease).
Dr Nagel completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MbChB) degree at the University of Cape Town in 1981, his Diploma in Child Health (DCH) at the South African College of Medicine in 1982, his Master of Medicine (MMED) at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town Allergy Clinic (University of Cape Town) in 1992, and his Fellowship with the College of Physicians (FCP) at the South African College of Medicine in 1989. He then went on to complete his Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRACP) at the Australasian College of Medicine in 1999. He was the Clinical Director Clinical Information Systems while in New Zealand, and took a national lead creating Clinical Information Systems – iHealth later iSoft. Dr Nagel owned his first Mobile Computer in the early 1980’s and has been using information technology in Clinical Medicine ever since.
On a personal level, Dr Nagel lost his firstborn son to heart disease soon after birth and this experience introduced him to the often misunderstood layers of communication driving parents to seek good outcomes for their children. His understanding of this dynamic continues to deepen as he strives to achieve meaningful results for the patients and their parents.
His clinical experiences are wide, having trained and worked in hospital and private practice in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia: meeting the sometimes very complex medical needs of children of all ages. He has worked in Regional and Tertiary Hospitals. He currently works as a Specialist Paediatrician at Prince Charles Hospital.
He is known to have played the guitar and sing and likes songs with meaning and feeling. He loves gardening, and propagating plants, specialising in cycads.
As part of the Paeds in a Pod team, Dr Nagel takes great pride in supporting families with children through all stages of their life, helping the children he sees to excel in every aspect of their health and wellbeing.
